KISSY'S STORY

Some time In the summer of 1993 I arrived at Calm Cove on Lakeshore Dr. in Colchester. I provided management services for the rental cabins. The owner lived in the main house. While in the house I saw a small black and white cat curled up sleeping on a couch. Suddenly it leapt  off the couch and ran up the stairs to the second floor in a fit of playfulness. It turns out that the owner's daughter while driving on Lakeshore Dr. saw a car in front of her pull over and dump two kittens on the side of the road. She stopped, picked them up and brought them to her dad's house. Being in the habit of taking in strays and finding them new homes I asked for and was given the cat.

When I got her home I discovered that she was heavily infested with fleas, the worse case I had ever seen. Also she had ear mites and her whiskers had all been cut off. Poor cat ... I immediately gave her multiple baths. This was before the days of Advantage. She was whisked  to the vet for a check up and shots. Other than the abusive and neglected condition the cat was okay.

In the days and weeks after, instead of following my usual practice of looking for a new home, I gradually fell in love. I discovered this cat to be so loving and intelligent that I decided to keep her. Eventually I named her Kissy, because I liked the sound of it and she was very liberal in her kisses for me. From that time on she was granted every luxury and creature comfort I could provide. We lived together alone for many years and over time developed a profound and cherished bond.

I faithfully took care of her until she passed away on 12/2/11 at the age of 19. When I watched her slip away I wanted to go with her. I held my tears until I was alone. Her ashes are on my desk and I wish them to be mixed with mine when I go. I have another new tuxedo cat now named Cicero. I'll be seventy eight years old when he gets to be the same age Kissy was when she died. Maybe I'll have two containers of ashes to mix with mine.   PS Cicero passed away Nov. 11, 2017 at the age of five years five months.
