Bandshell Halfway To Its Goal

Churches Raise Money For Performance Center

The Milton Outdoor Performance Center (MOPC)
is well on its way to groundbreaking as fund-raising efforts have

netted over half the money needed.

“We’re over halfway and it’s very exciting,” said Lonnie Poland, the missional leader for Cornerstone Community Church and one of the project coordinators.

Poland said the team has raised $12,500 of their original goal of $20,000. Donations of time and money have rolled in from area businesses, the Ronald McDonald House Charities, several Milton residents and individual citizens, the Amy Tarrant Foundation, and the Richard Tarrant Foundation.

“We’re on target. It’s been a lot of work and we have been diligent about it, things have been going along without significant delays or obstacles,” Poland said.

In addition, the project has received approval from the Milton Development Review Board and now has its building permit in hand. Poland said there were no significant hang-ups during the DRB process.

“The town’s been very supportive and receptive toward the idea,” she said.

The two church parishes have banded together to raise the funds for the outdoor stage area, construct it, and give it to the town as a gift. The proposed center is a dome-shaped metal structure with an open back and a raised stage area. The roof will be capable of suspending one ton of lighting, backdrops, or other equipment.

Poland said the project coordinators will continue to fund-raise through the winter with the hopes of breaking ground in the spring. The fund-raising events include a craft bazaar on Dec. 2, and a dinner-dance at the Eagles Club on Jan. 20 hosted by the WOKO radio station.

The boundaries for the MOPC has been staked out in the Recreation Park on Bombardier Road, and the coordinators have been updating the community through a Web site, http://www.miltoncenter.org/
