Performance Center aiming for Sept. 22

By TAMMY SELLERS| Freelance Writer

No longer will enjoying the great outdoors and listening to an outstanding musical performance be mutually exclusive!

Although construction at the Milton Outdoor Performance Center site in Bombardier Park may seem quiet at the moment, a lot of prep work has taken place to build a solid foundation. If the weather cooperates and the volunteers continue their service, the MOPC will be dedicated on September 22, 2007.

Numerous volunteers have contributed countless hours to ensure that the Town of Milton’s outdoor performance center will result in an outstanding building.

The excavation of two trenches for the outside piers has been completed. Four cement forms have been built, placed and leveled in one of the trenches. Once the rebar cages have been placed and leveled, the pouring of the 16 cement piers can begin.

Lonnie Poland, Co-Chair MOPC project anticipates that the building of the platform, the raising of the arches and the application of the roof will be a real Milton “barn raising” type experience.

Designed for an assortment of uses the performance center will be a shell-shaped metal structure with a raised stage, capable of suspending all types of performance equipment such as lights and backdrops.

Poland is appreciative for the work that has and will continue to go into making the MOPC a reality. “We are very fortunate to have the skills and dedication of Ed DeVarney, John Gordon, David Poland and John Lindsay who have volunteered and worked innumerable hours both onsite and behind the scenes. They are truly my hometown heroes.” In addition Poland expresses her gratitude to Marc and Laurie Vien, Bill and Karen Edwards, Karlo Salminen, George Caban and Paul Smith who have volunteered during work crew days. Also supporting the project with their talent and equipment, many thanks go out to Brett Macy of Exit 18 Equipment, Ander Cary of AJC Excavation, George McRae of McRae Truck & Auto Service, and Mountain Air Systems. Donations of construction materials from Queen City Steel, Frank W. Whitcomb, Donald H. Turner & Son’s Construction & Kenneth Adams Construction are also greatly appreciated.

A special thank you to Cobble Hill Trailer for the longer than anticipated use of the work site trailer. Moreover, to the Building Home Center for supporting this amazing community project.

A planning meeting for the dedication celebration is scheduled for Tuesday, August 7 at 7:00 p.m. in the Municipal Building. All are invited to attend. If you wish to volunteer for a work crew to lend a hand in the completion of the MOPC please contact John Gordon at 893-1398.
